Family First, Always

Updated: Aug 15

One year ago today, overwhelmed by a blend of fear, uncertainty, excitement, and possibility, I wrote about Grandpa and Grammie, two of the most influential people in my life. Rather than rehash my thoughts, the best thing I can share is that same piece.

In the past year, I’ve leaned heavily on those two, facing ups and downs, financial pressures, and all the anxiety and worries that come with building a business. But more importantly, I needed their guidance around family in a couple other ways…

In January, my brother was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. The few months after were some of the scariest and most trying of my life. In the hands of the best doctors around, he turned a corner.

Not only is he alive and doing much better, but he ran a 5k this past weekend and did so faster than 3/4 of men his age. I’m in awe as I reflect on his journey. And I’m so grateful to run with him, literally and figuratively.

In February, my aunt and my rock, who ferociously battled cancer for 34 years, told me her fight was over and that hospice was starting. Six weeks later, she passed. And in that time, I did everything I could to live by the example my grandparents set – be there for family at all costs.

So, as I hit the one year anniversary of my new business journey, I can’t help but reflect on how much family plays a role. Because without the beautiful relationships I have with, and the incredible lessons I learn from my loved ones, I’d never have made it this far.

For you, Grandpa. For you, Grammie. For you, Auntie. For you, little bro. For you, Dad. And for you, 307k – the next year will be the best yet.
